What Is Mindfulness?


“Mindfulness is simply being aware of what is happening right now without wishing it were different; enjoying the pleasant without holding on when it changes (which it will); being with the unpleasant without fearing it will always be this way (which it won't).” ~ James Baraz

Mindfulness is being fully present and engaged with what you are doing at the moment. It involves being free from judgement, distraction, being aware of our feelings, thoughts and emotions in the present "now." In doing this we are teaching the mind to be present - which is very helpful when we are faced with difficult situations or circumstances.



Mindfulness vs meditation


Many people often believe that mindfulness is a temporary state of being that is present during meditation and then disappears for the rest of the day. This is not the case, mindfulness is a way of living where we are able to step back and be in the present moment during any given situation.


By doing so, we become aware of unpleasant feelings, thoughts and emotions that arise due to challenging situations. When we are living in the present, we have a better chance of reacting calmly and empathetically when faced with stress or difficult situations. This does not mean that we never get angry practicing mindfulness, rather it allows us to be more practical and thoughtful with the way we do respond.


Practicing meditation is the starting point for learning mindfulness. With meditation we can start living in the present "now" for a limited period of time. With regular practice of mindfulness you can develop the ability to be present everyday of every hour.

Why should you practice mindfulness? It's a great way to manage anxiety & stress while boosting energy, compassion, patience, happiness, empathy and focus. If you are new to mindfulness I would recommend a guided meditation that's led by a teacher or on an online platform. YouTube has some great free guided meditations.


Many guided meditations follow a similar format: the teacher explains how the mind behaves during meditation, then leads you through a particular meditation technique finished with suggestions on how to incorporate this technique into your daily life.

~ Improvements to concentration levels, memory and cognitive ability.


~ An increase in productivity by being able to deal with distractions more effectively and efficiently.

Face whatever is holding you back head on and it no longer has power over you, you have power over it! Awareness and anything can't co exist. Awareness is more powerful than your ego, your emotions, your thoughts and your feelings. Awareness is what gets you back home to your soul purpose.


You can use your pain and turn it into power. If you are willing to work on where your pain comes from, the lesson to be learned and turn your knowledge into action, you can use your suffering to turn you into a stronger and wiser person!
