Are You Emotionally Repressed? How to Tell...

"Unexpressed emotions will never die. They are buried alive and will come forth later in uglier ways." ~ Sigmund Freud

We all suppress our emotions at some point. A healthy person can then later release those emotions by confiding in friends, going for a workout, writing in their journal or crying it out.

If you are emotionally repressed you will hate being asked how you feel about someone or something. This question will leave you feeling powerless, speechless and confused. Alternately you may feel annoyed, aggressive or angry if you believe someone is violating your privacy by asking it. When you are emotionally repressed, understanding coping and showing your emotions will be a problem in all areas of your life.

~ You think sadness is "bad" and you rarely if every cry

~ When you take the time to listen to your own thoughts, it's often criticism or negative thinking of yourself and others

~ You feel very uncomfortable around highly emotional people

~ When you do get sad or angry, you often overreact and blow up over small issues

~ You often feel a need to control things in your life

~ You self medicate with cigarettes, alcohol and or drugs

~ You go thru phases of relying on escape hobbies like: oversleeping, social media use, video games and binge watching TV

~You consider yourself as laid back, easygoing and you think you feel fine all the time

Emotional repression shows up most in the ways you relate to others, like:

~ You have few close friendships, and struggle with intimacy or have a fear of intimacy

~ You seem to be open with strangers, but the authentic you is still hidden

~ You are a private person and rarely if ever open up to people

~ You use humor or anger to hide your own feelings

~ You have a hard time being alone and authentic with yourself

~ You suffer from ongoing stress and anxiety

~ You use self destructive behaviors like: drug use, drinking too much, over working and over eating

~ Your mind is often unclear and foggy leading you to be absent-minded and forgetful

~ You have sleep problems sleeping too much or not sleeping enough

~ You have a low immune system and might constantly getting flues and colds

~You struggle with weight issues

~ You suffer from low self worth and esteem

~ You often feel tired and low for no real reason or are depressed

The following can be signs you have a backlog of hidden emotions that need to be expressed:

~ Emotionally cold

~ Passive aggressive

~ Not authentic

~ Having a wall or guard up
