The 7 Chakras For Beginners

There are seven main chakras, which align the spine, starting from the base of the spine through to the crown of the head that are the main energy centers of the body. They are pathways that promote balance and harmony between the mind, body and spirit. When energy called Prana gets blocked in our seven chakras, this can lead to distress in our bodies. Because of this, it's important to understand what each chakra represents and how to keep the energy flowing freely.

The 3 Chakras of Matter

Starting from the base of the spine, the first three chakras are chakras of matter. They are more physical in nature.

The Muladhara is the chakra of security, stability and our basic needs. It includes the first three vertebrae, the colon and the bladder. We feel safe and fearless when this chakra is open.

The Svadhisthana chakra is the chakra for creativity and sexuality. Located below the navel, above the pubic bone, and is responsible for our creative expression.

The Manipura chakra is located in the area from the navel to the breastbone. This third chakra is our source of personal power.

The Fourth Chakra: The Connection Between Matter and Spirit

The fourth chakra, anahata is located a the heart centre and unites the lower chakras of matter and the upper chakras of spirit. This chakra serves as a bridge between our mind, body, spirit and emotions. Our heart chakra is our source of connection and love.

The fifth chakra Vishuddha is located in the area of the throat. The fifth chakra includes the jaw, mouth, tongue, thyroid, neck, thyroid, and parathyroid glands. This chakra is associated with our verbal expressions and the ability to speak our truth.

The sixth chakra Ajna is located in between the eyebrows. This chakra is known as the "third eye" chakra which is the center of our intuition. All of us have intuition, but many don't listen to it as often as they should. By opening the third eye you can increase your intuition.

The final chakra Sahaswara is located at the crown of the head. The seventh chakra is also known as the“thousand petal lotus” chakra. This chakra is associated with enlightenment and our spiritual connection to our higher selves, others and the divine.

Having the awareness to which of your chakras are out of balance is key to aligning them. Our bodies are in constant flux between imbalance and balance. Imbalances are your bodies way of telling you there is something wrong. It's up to you to listen. Have you had any chakra imbalances? If so which ones?
